How to Buy a Domain Name Without Getting Ripped Off
Domain pricing is a mess globally. We break down the real cost, what to watch out for, and how to buy a domain at a fair price without being surprised at renewal time.

Domain registrars have spent decades perfecting the art of the misleading price. You see a .com for $0.99 and click buy. A year later, you pay $18 to renew it. This is not an accident.
Here's how to avoid getting caught.
Understand the actual pricing structure
Every domain has two prices: the registration price (what you pay the first year) and the renewal price (what you pay every year after). These are almost never the same at discount registrars.
A $0.99 .com registration typically renews at $15–18. If you keep the domain for five years, you've paid $70–75 total — not $0.99.
Always check the renewal price before you buy. A good registrar shows it clearly. A bad one buries it in the checkout flow.
What TLD should you choose?
.com is still the global standard. If it's available for your brand, get it. People type .com by default. It's worth the extra cost.
.org works for nonprofits and community projects. .net for tech and infrastructure. .io has become popular with startups and developers.
New TLDs like .shop, .online, .store, .xyz are cheaper but less familiar to users. They're fine for side projects or if your .com is taken — just make sure people can remember yours.
Country-code TLDs (.co.uk, .com.au, .ng, etc.) are worth considering if your business is primarily local and you want to signal that in search results.
Watch out for:
- Renewal price spikes — shown above. Always compare first-year and renewal costs.
- Auto-renewal traps — set a calendar reminder. Some registrars make cancellation deliberately difficult close to the renewal date.
- Hidden fees for WHOIS privacy — your contact details go in a public database when you register a domain. ICANN now mandates free WHOIS privacy at many registrars; check if yours charges for it.
- Transfer lock-in — some registrars make moving your domain to another provider unnecessarily painful. Check the transfer policy before registering.
- Premium pricing — certain in-demand domains (like short .com names or exact-match keywords) are marked "premium" and cost hundreds or thousands. If a domain is flagged as premium, it's usually not worth it unless it's your exact brand name.
How Chavica handles this
When you buy a domain through Chavica, we show you both the registration and renewal price before checkout — no hidden surprises. Your domain automatically connects to your Chavica site, and you manage DNS records from the same dashboard. There's no separate registrar login to remember.
Our pricing is based on live wholesale rates with a transparent margin. We don't run $0.99 loss-leader promotions that triple at renewal. What you see is what you'll pay every year.
The short version
Check renewal pricing before you buy. Pick .com if it's available. Avoid ultra-discount registrars with sketchy renewal terms. And if your domain and website are with the same provider, managing everything is much simpler.
